Reading Motivation

Here at Dania Elementary our philosophy is to get students at our school to read and
use a variety of media. Our responsibility is to provide students, staff and parents with
instruction of skills that supports the school’s curriculum. We encourage students to participate in a variety of Reading Motivation programs such as Reading Across Broward
and Accelerated Reader.

Broward County Library

In order for our students to have a love of reading, read aloud at home with your child for at least fifteen minutes every day, take a trip to your local Broward County Library to checkout materials and have literature handy such as newspapers, magazines, etc. in your home. If your children see you reading, then they will want to read too!

Lexile

Students now have an additional reading resource to help them locate exciting books tailored to their own interests or school assignments. Through a joint partnership between the Florida Departments of Education and  State, and Lexile®-developer MetaMetrics®, “Find a Book, Florida” aims to encourage students to consistently read throughout the year by helping them locate books they’ll be challenged by and enjoy.   

This free, online book search tool allows students to build personal reading lists that will best complement their reading ability and interests from a growing database of fiction and nonfiction titles. Using Lexile measures, the standard for matching readers with books, “Find a Book, Florida” makes it easier for students and families to select the right books and then locate these selections at their local public library.

Since the program’s inception in Florida this summer, “Find a Book” has scored more than 40,000 unique visits to the site, averaging nearly 10 minutes in the book search. You
can access the book search by going to the Department of Education’s website or by visiting Lexile.
